Deck Staining Questions Answered

Straight answers to what Toronto homeowners ask us most — pricing, products, process, and what to expect.

Pricing

Deck staining in Toronto ranges from $400–$700 for a small deck (up to 200 sq ft, single coat) to $1,200–$2,000+ for a large deck (400+ sq ft, single coat). Two-coat applications add roughly 30–40% to the base price. We provide free, detailed on-site estimates with no obligation — the exact price depends on deck size, current condition, the type of finish, and the wood species.

Maintenance

Most decks in the GTA need re-staining every 2–3 years for a single coat, or every 3–5 years for a two-coat application with a quality penetrating stain. Horizontal surfaces (the deck boards you walk on) wear faster than vertical surfaces (railings, posts) because they take the full force of rain, snow, and foot traffic. Signs it's time: greying wood, water no longer beading on the surface, or the stain peeling or flaking.

Process

Yes — power washing is the first step in every project and is non-negotiable for a lasting result. Applying new stain over dirt, mould, mildew, or a failing old finish causes poor adhesion and blotchy colour that fails within a season. We use commercial-grade pressure washing equipment and, where needed, a deck cleaning solution to remove embedded grime and grey oxidation. The deck must then dry completely before staining begins.

Products

We use premium oil-based penetrating stains from professional product lines designed for Ontario's climate. These are not the same as what you'll find at a big-box hardware store. Oil-based stains penetrate deep into the wood fibres rather than sitting on the surface like a film, which means they protect from within and don't peel or flake when the wood moves with seasonal temperature changes. All our stains include UV inhibitors, mould inhibitors, and mildew inhibitors.

Aftercare

Most penetrating stains allow light foot traffic within 24–48 hours and full use (furniture, barbecue, etc.) within 72 hours to one week depending on the product, temperature, and humidity at the time of application. We provide specific curing instructions when the job is complete. Avoid rain during the first 24–48 hours after application.

Services

Yes. All of our restoration projects include structural assessment and necessary repairs — board replacement, fastener replacement, railing tightening, and ledger inspection. For staining and refinishing projects, we handle minor surface repairs (setting raised nails, filling surface cracks, light sanding) as part of the prep. Major structural work is scoped separately. We'll identify everything during the free estimate visit.
